2 Words

Today Derek and I heard Gavin saying 2 words together! I am not sure if he has done this before, but I think it was the first time! He said "Bath, Wawa" and "No, no, no, kitty!" I will count "No, no, no" as one word:) He says this quite often, especially when he does not want you to do something. He also shrugs his shoulders and moves his arms away from you when you try ti pick him up/put a coat on and he does not want to. After we tell him, "If you want to go outside, you need to put a coat on!" and then he sits down to put it on:) One of his nicknames is little booger, and this is one reason:)

Gavin also has been saying lots of new words. It seems like he at least tries to say whatever we say now. I had no idea that I say "God" a lot, but now I know. (It is something I need to work on!) While putting the laundry in the washer, I looked over and noticed that Gavin was about to dump out the cat food bowl, and then he did. He took off running, and I was cleaning it up. I must have mumbled "Oh God" because he ran up to me and said "Ohhh GAH!"

Monterey Bay Aquarium!

Today we drove down to Monterey to go to the aquarium! Gavin and Grandma had both never been, so we thought it was time. It turned out to be the most beautiful day ever, and such a perfect time to drive to this beautiful city!

I also want to mention real quick how unbelievably good Gavin is in the car now! He was good as gold, and slept the entire drive there and home:)

We left at 9am, and like I said, G slept. We had a nice drive through the sunshine, past all the farms in Gilroy. Grandma had never been down that way, so it was new to her. Even though we drove past lots of cows, it is still a very pretty drive. It was also very peaceful because G was snoring away!

We arrived to Monterey at about 10ish, and headed straight for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Lets just say that Gavin AND Grandma were in absolute heaven. They both were having so much fun, and we got to see some pretty cool things! I think Gavin AND Grandma had the same favorite area….the one where they got to stick their hands in the water and touch all the little crabs/starfish/plants/I have no idea what else! Another fun area was the toddler area. Gavin was so happy to run around and play in the water area. Of course!

We went and had lunch at the Fishhopper restaurant, which is very close by. We sat outside on the patio, in the sun, and enjoyed a very delicious lunch while listening to music play and waves crash below us. The food was so good, and it was such a great day for it!

After lunch, we headed back to the aquarium for more fun. We went through the rest of it, and got to see so many animals and fish. It is a really great place to go!

When we left, we decided to stop at the Nestle Toll House cookie shop (YUMMY!) and then the beach. Gavin and Grandma got to play in the sand and explore. After beach time, we had a very short walk to the car, and home we went! G, again, fell right asleep, and slept almost the entire ride home. We had such a great time, we can’t wait to do it again!

Play-Doh with Grandma!

Today Gavin got to play with play-doh for the first time! Grandma and Gavin had a great time making fun things with the play-doh, and Gavin LOVED it. It kept him entertained for a while. Gavin tried to eat it every few minutes, and we would just say no. He did eventually eat a little piece that we could not fish out:) Thanks for the fun day Grandma!

18 Month Doctor Visit

Today we went to Gavin's 18mo appointment at the doctor. We saw a new doctor, Dr. Yen. We are now Kaiser Permanente members, so this is our new medical home. Both Gavin and I will be going here, and ONLY here. (It is a HMO system, they have their own hospitals and medical offices) Dr. Yen was very nice and good with Gavin. She has two young daughters, so she is very understanding.

Dr. Yen is also OK with Gavin's delayed vaccination schedule, which I was nervous about. (Some MD's do not agree with delaying, some do...just depends) We decided to go ahead with his next scheduled vaccine (HIB) and we will continue to wait until 24mo to start the MMR. I also made it clear that we will be declining Influenza and Hep A, and we can revisit these in a few years when Gavin is older. She agrees that this was completely fine, and these 2 are not ones she is concerned with. She informed me that this specific clinic has the highest rate of NON-vaccinated children. Wow, this was kinda scary to hear! Although we are delaying vaccines, Gavin will eventually get most of them (The most important ones-from a public health safety standpoint) and I believe in each and every one. Vaccines are there to protect our children AND the safety of other children. I am not sure how I feel about all of this, it makes me very worried for Gavin and the future years. I still am in shock that so many people do not vaccinate their children at ALL!

On to the fun stuff. Gavin's stats:
Weight: 25.2 pounds (40%)
Height: 33.3 inches (80%)
Head Circ: 48.3 cm (65%)

Gavin did such a great job while being checked out by Dr. Yen. He just sat on my lap and let her look in his ears, in his eyes, and mouth. When she was done he said "More!!!" HAHA. Then he let her assess his body and was very cooperative.

We only talked about 2 things. The first was peanuts. Since Gavin had the cow milk protein issue when he was younger, we knew we would wait to introduce peanuts. The Academy of Pediatrics says two years old, so we thought that was a good age. But Dr. Yen says three years old. She says she (And many of her colleagues) recommend three years old. (From an allergy and choking standpoint) Since Gavin's first cousin Griffin has a severe peanut/tree nut allergy, we think we better be safe. (I learned that peanut oil to cook with is OK, from my peanut allergy expert sister!) So no nuts until three years! We will do our best to stick to this, but seeing the way Gavin eats, I fear he may be eating a friends PB&J sooner than we hope;)

The next this we talked about was vitamins. Gavin eats Gummy Vites every day (One a day) and they are not recommended until 2 years old (Choking). Dr. Yen seemed surprised that he ate these, and asked if he did OK with them...meaning did he chew them enough and not choke. HAHA she does not know Gavin yet! He would eat a fist full of gummy's and not choke! (I did not admit that we don't even really cut his food up anymore!)

The last part of the day was the vaccine. There is a separate little room for this, and now I know why all the older kids give this door a nasty glance when they walk in! We sat down, and I pulled down G's pants for the shot. One quick shot in the thigh and we were done. The nurse knows I am a pediatric nurse (stupid chart) and told me I could do it if I wanted. HAHA lady! Not sure if she has gone insane, but no thanks! Not if I don't have to! Gavin's lip quivered for a few seconds and then BAM. Big old scream. His poor little face was so sad, like he was completely violated. He was so confused to why one minute he was happy, and the next he was stabbed in the leg. Poor boy!

It sure was nice to have Grandma Podie there with us! Grandma helped keep him occupied and happy while we were there, and always makes G feel better:) Thanks Gma!

We left the office and headed for the park and then the store to pick up some stuff....including a little toy to make G feel better (As if we need more toys here).

Next appointment at TWO YEARS OLD!

Sweet tooth

One thing Gavin loves to do it eat. He has a pretty healthy and balanced diet, well as balanced as any toddler can be! He eats pretty well throughout the day, but he also gets treats once in a while! Gavin has a MAJOR sweet tooth (Like his momma) so I knew he would like making brownies! Here he is helping Grandma make brownies. Once he figured out that the batter tasted good, he no longer wanted to help stir....just LICK:)

One and a half Birthday present!

Dear Gavin. Since you were born, our house has been taken over with toys. Then, last summer, our garage was taken over with toys. Now, your one and a half birthday, and our backyard has started to fill with Gavin gear. Tonight, we gave you a little gift. Well, you think it is a pretty BIG gift! A SANDBOX!!! Since you LOVE the sand so much, we thought you would enjoy one in your own yard. Turns out we were right. You helped Daddy set it up, and you were so happy to play in it after dinner. We had to drag you out to go inside to take your bath!

{Gavin 18 Months}

Dear Mr. Monkey Gavin,

Today you turn one and a half. I cannot believe that it has been a half a year since you turned ONE! That sounds crazy when I type it out. But, as we all know, time passes so quickly when you are having fun!

You are at such a fun and adventurous age right now. You certainly never sit down and are always on the go. You keep us all on our feet, all the time! Now I know what it is like to take care of a very busy toddler, and I am so tired! You are so much fun, you smile all the time, and sometimes I look at you and I cannot get enough of you. Your cheeks, your hair, your words, and the way you hold my hand. I am so deeply in love with you. You love strangers, and you are not afraid to go up to someone and show them what you want. Of course, all we ever hear is "He is Sooo adorable...the cutest little boy!"

You still have a very serious love for food. All food all the time. You want a "snack" at every hour, and you eat very well. Just when I think you are full, you will go and ask for more food. Some of your favorite foods include pasta, banana, turkey, any fruit, yogurt, cheese, peas, and all sweet treats. You now drink cow's milk, and you love it. You ask for your "Milk" or "Wa-Wa" when you are thirsty. Some days you will drink 3 glasses of milk:) One of your favorite foods is still the Plum Baby smoothie pouches. They are fruit/veggie purees with a straw, and you suck down about 2 a day, always on the go. It is a great way to get some veggies in you, and they are nice and healthy. OK, on to the snacks. Most of your snacks are just little bowls of what you would eat for a meal, and we call them snacks. But, you also have a ton of real snack food you like. Goldfish, cheese sticks, apple chips, raisins, prunes, veggie stix, and a ton of others. And of course, if someone offers you real junk food, you will take it! As for sweets? We cannot even crinkle the wrapper around you with out you wanting it over and over. You definitely have my sweet tooth! There are now absolutely no restrictions in your diet. We were going to wait until 2 to give you nuts, but today when were were out to lunch, you had a ton of french fries that were cooked in peanut oil. Oh well! Fingers crossed!

Sleep. Oh Gavin, I think it is safe to say that your sleep habits are pretty good these days! You used to wake up at 4am, but now you are getting up closer to 5:30 or even 6 some days! You continue to do really well overnight, and sleep from 7pm on. You rarely wake up at night, unless you are sick with a cold. OR A HURT NECK! See previous post about that! You are napping one time a day, after lunch sometime, and this varies from 1 to 2.5 hrs. Most days, you also take a quick power nap at about 9am in the car. (You fall asleep wherever we are going, and I let you sleep for a little) This routine seems to be working. We feel pretty lucky:)

Nursing. You are only nursing once a day now, at bedtime! You have completely weaned yourself, and I think that this last feeding will go soon. You are still excited to cuddle and calm down this way, but I am thinking this won't last much longer. I am so happy with this experience, and I feel very blessed that I was able to give you what you needed for the last 18 months! A very natural and smooth process:)

Words. Oh I mean Gavin language. Gavin you talk all day long. A mix of words and Gavin language. We LOVE all the noises you make, and are so proud of the connections you are making. Every day you try to say a new word, and we need to start watching out! No more S#*& around here!

Activity. Well, I don't need to say much here. Anyone and everyone who knows you, knows that you are very active, all the time. You do like to sit on laps to read books, and this time is so great for everyone....it gives us all a break!

Gavin, I could go on and on and on about you. You bring us such joy, each and every day of our life. I am so proud of you and the little person that you are becoming. You are so sweet and love to "kiss" all the time. It melts my heart each and every time...Love you little monkey!

Boardwalk with Grandma!

After we left the park we headed to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk! Grandma AND Gavin both had never been here. We parked the car and walked along the boardwalk. We grabbed lunch, and headed for the beach. Of course, Gavin was in heaven with the sand. He loved being able to play in it, and feel it between his toes. We sat in the sun and ate our pizza....while Gavin ran around. Gavin was even brave enough to go in the ocean!!! A wave came up to him, and it scared him, so he tried to walk backwards...and then fell on his bottom, and then fell all the way backwards in the water! Poor boy! I scooped him right up, and he was not that upset by the wave, he was upset that his clothes were wet! So, we took everything off, and he was a little chilly, so he just wore his jacket. He was fine with that!

We are so excited that we live so close to the beach....I have a feeling since the weather is so nice, this will be a regular trip now!

Gavin and "tee's"

Today we decided to head over to Santa Cruz to go to the Redwood forest, and the beach. This was one of Grandma’s favorite things to do last time she was here….so we thought Gavin might like it too!

We started out at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. It was a beautiful walk into the park, and we stopped at the ranger station to get a flashlight to see in the trees. We walked around to see the big beautiful redwood trees, and it was so amazing. These trees are so old, and so big…and walking around under the shade of them is so peaceful. Grandma and Gavin went inside one of the oldest trees there, and got to look around with the flashlight. When Grandma went back in the tree with out Gavin, he became very concerned about her and ran after her!

Just like Daddy

Every morning, Daddy leaves for work with his lunch bag. Gavin watches him go, and waves bye-bye. The other day, Gavin grabbed Daddy's lunch bag, walked to the truck, and wanted to leave...he thinks he is going to work:)

Monkey's first trip to urgent care!

Today Gavin took his first trip to urgent care. We knew this day would come soon enough. To be honest, I thought it would have happened a LONG time ago! BUT we have been lucky, and monkey has never hurt himself...until yesterday.

Yesterday was any old day, and Gavin was his usual self. A total monkey. Running, climbing, and trying to hang on things. Just. like. a. MONKEY! He went to bed, no problem.

Woke up a few times and fussed, but went back to bed.

Woke up at *gasp* 6:30 AM!!!!!! In Gavin world, this is LATE!

Woke up crying (Unusual) and wanted to snuggle (Also unusual). He is normally happy and full speed from the moment he wakes up.

So we cuddled on the couch, and he was acting strange. I tried to lift him up, and his head was like a dead weight on my chest. He could not and would not move his head. And if I did it for him he screamed like he was in severe pain. Grandma and I knew that something was wrong. I called the doctor, and she said to wait to see what happened.

We gave him time, Tylenol, and just cuddled. He was a happy boy as long as he was laying down on me or Grandma. 3 hours passed, and he was still laying. Not wanting to eat, but happy. As long as his head was on our chest. We knew he was not feeling good, so we just let him rest. Gavin and Daddy played....and then he fell asleep on Daddy's chest for over 2 hours! During this time, I called the doctor again and told them that something was wrong and she agreed that he should come in. Of course, my brain starts to think about the worst...meningitis, and his symptoms would fit that perfectly. So we decided to go in at 2:30.

by 2:30, Gavin was able to hold his head up, and was almost back to his usual self. But, he could not look up. Every time we would show him something above him, he would try to look up, and then cry. We knew then that his neck hurt, and it was not a headache. So we went in to the doctor, and she did a very thorough examination. She said that most likely, he just hurt his neck somehow, and he was getting better. We knew that, but of course, wanted to be safe.

A little Motrin, and he is almost back to normal. He is in bed, after a great Mexican dinner....keeping my fingers crossed that he feels better by the morning!

Favorite Activity: Hose Water

Give Gavin a hose, turn it on a little bit, and Gavin is in heaven. This is one of his favorite activities these days. It has been so warm in the afternoon, so Gavin will sit here and play with the hose for an hour. He likes to fill the watering can and water all the plants. You can see the look of sheer concentration in his face. His body is usually soaking wet with hose water, and right below his chin is soaking with drool:) I must have made him wear his snow boots the first time we did this, because now each time he wants to play with the hose, he goes and sits by his snow boots. Since they will obviously not be used for snow, we call them his water boots.

Grandma's HERE & Big boy cereal & Crayons!

Two days ago was just any old day, Gavin had just woke up from his nap, and we were having lunch. I heard someone at the front door, and it was GRANDMA!!! I was in shock! Grandma was here for a surprise visit, for 2 weeks!!! I have always wished that this would happen, but Ohio is pretty far away for this to be an easy task! Gavin was all smiles, and very excited to have his Gma here to play with him non-stop! We are so happy:) (Everyone else was in on the secret but me....)

We have been having fun with Gma, showing her all the fun stuff we do. Parks, walks, play-dates, and Happy Hollow so far...and we have a lot planned for the next few weeks. I will be sure to take lots of pictures!

Here are some of this morning, when Gavin got my bowl of cereal for breakfast. Yes, that is CORN POPS in the bowl. A big treat for Gavin! He is getting so good at eating with the spoon...and LOVES to have a bowl with food for each meal. Then the other pictures are of Gavin coloring with crayons. He is starting to really show an interest in coloring/drawing. The next thing on our list of Gavin Gear to get? An art easel! I also think he would enjoy play-dough and markers....but am I ready for that stuff? He already has purple crayon on his rocking chair...after 10 minutes of having the crayons out. Hmmm.

*The first picture of him drawing is his "fake smile" that he gives me when I bring out the camera now. I say "Smile Gavin!" and he does that face...He thinks its pretty funny....so do we:)

Happy Hollow with Friends

Today Gavin and I went to Happy Hollow to meet some friends. We decided to get a membership there since Gavin is now old enough to love it. He actually loved it when he was one last year, but we did not want to start the membership at the end of the summer.  He is actually free until he is 2, so it was a great deal!

When we got there my friend Hilary and her daughter Madeleine (15mo) were already there. We have not seen them in a while, so it was fun to get together! M & G were off exploring immediately, and they had the most fun playing in the wood chips. Go figure. They rode the cars for a while, and went down the slides. Poor M had a little “Uh-Oh” as Gavin says. She went flying down the slide before we even realized, and hit her face on the slide at the bottom. Even with a busted lip, she calmed right down, and kept playing. Not much was going to stop her from keeping up with the big boys!

Gina met up with us soon after, with her 2 boys. Jackson (Almost 3) and Charlie (6mo).  We all ran around the park, and Jackson helped show the babies what to do. I got to hold sweet Charlie for a little while too:) (Gavin was a little jealous!) Charlie is the definition of an easy baby. He just watched the older ones run around, and would smile when I gave him attention. So sweet:)

We had lunch in the sunshine, while G and Jackson played and ran around. Then we went to see all the animals, and Jack kept yelling “See more animals!!!” each time we saw one. It was pretty cute to watch these two run around and laugh at all the animals. Gavin’s favorite animal was the perrot. Or “Birds” as he says. They were talking to each other, and Gavin & Jack thought this was hilarious. We also got to see lots of other animals like the lemur, turtle, monkey, capybara, pig (Not sure the real name of these things!), fossa, jaguar, deer, duck and meerkats! Gavin LOVES to see the animals.

Right before we left we stopped at the swing that Gavin loves to sit on. He laid on it with baby Charlie, and it was adorable to see them laugh and smile at Gina. I can’t leave him on this too long, or he will fall asleep. His eyes start to get droopy, and he tries so hard to stay awake…that’s when I get him off to head home!

It was a really fun day with work friends, and their kiddos. Hilary, Gina and I are all relief nurses at LPCH, so its nice that we can all get together…Now only if we all lived closer to one another!

Gavin the teacher

What a busy past few weeks! I really wish I had more time to blog, but its been pretty busy around here. Well, and Gavin is a non-stop kinda toddler, so its HARD to find time to do this anymore! Anyways, I wanted to just write down a few things so I don't forget!

We have been busy with lots of things this past week. Preschool open house's, playdates with the playgroup, playdates with friends, LOTS of sunny park days, and lots of nice walks outside. I have also picked up a few extra shifts at work, so it has been a busy time!

Gavin has recently become obsessed with anything that has to do with planes, birds, trucks, or balloons. If he sees, hears, or knows we will see them, he tells me about 100 times. He loves to look at trucks while driving or walking. He says "truck" over and over. If a plane fly's by, Gavin knows it. I am always so amazed that he hears and sees them, even when I don't! He also spots any bird flying nearby...and tells me "Bird!!!"

Gavin has been climbing all over everything when we go to the parks now. Not just what he is supposed to climb on, but also what he is not. Just today he taught the other boys in his playgroup how to climb up on some big rocks at the park. There were a million other kid friendly things he could have climbed on, and he chose the big dangerous rocks. He does this all the time. If it is the right height to get up on something, he is there! I used to go run and stand right by him, but now I just watch, and keep my fingers crossed:) (If it was really dangerous, I would be close!) Anyways, he sure is quite the little teacher, or should I say influence, when he plays with his friends! Oh lord, I can only imagine what he will be like as a teen!

Gavin is Mr. chatterbox all day long. Most is Gavin language, but we sure can figure out what he is saying!  He says more, no, yea, book, bird, truck, balloon, ohh, dad, and ma about 1,000 times a day.

Gavin is also pretty obsessed with Baby Einstein on the computer. He likes to watch the Baby Animals one and makes the "Whoooo" sound for the owl, and the "Ruff-ruff" for the dog. When he wants to read a book he says book, and when he wants to watch the Baby Einstein he says book. Hmmm.

I think that's all for now, Gavin is asleep, and I am Exhausted! I really never knew how much a busy toddler could wear me out!
